I joined Dr. Muma's laboratory in December 2014. Research in our lab focuses on core areas of depression, Schizophrenia and Huntington's Disease (HD). HD is autosomal dominant, progressive neurodegenerative disorder, currently affecting ~ 30,000 people in the US. My current research is focused on identifying and developing small molecules as biological probes that disrupt the binding of mutant huntingtin (mhtt) to Calmodulin (CaM) and prevent transamidation of mutant hungtingtin by transglutaminase 2. Disrupting the binding between mhtt and CaM was identified as a novel drug target in cell culture and transgenic mouse models of HD in previous studies in our laboratory. The biological probes, once identified, could be used to develop drugs to prevent the progressive neurodegeneration in HD.
